Teeth Whitening Systems - Different Kinds of Teeth Whitening Systems

When you first meet a person, one of the things that attract you to him or her is their great smile. You know that your smile is an important of the first impression you make whether in business or in your personal life. If you are not pleased with how white your teeth are, you may be interested in learning about teeth whitening systems. You can either opt for over the counter methods or go with the professional systems.

Non-Professional Teeth Whitening

Many people on very tight budgets look at the over the counter teeth whitening systems. Many of these are comprised of a strip that is worn on the teeth for a specified amount of time once or twice a day and then discarded. The best over the counter products may be able to lighten your teeth up to three shades. The main advantage is the cost, which is only about $40 in the pharmacy section of your local supermarket. The drawbacks can be finding the 30 minutes and some drooling and messiness which may occur, as well as the fact that they can only lighten up to three shades per treatment. If you have quite a few shades of lightening that you must go through in order to get the shade you really want, those treatments could begin to add up and you will need to do follow up treatments about every six months to maintain the white shade.

If you want less expensive over the counter teeth whitening systems, or you have sensitive teeth, you might want to try the strips that actually dissolve while in your mouth. The advantage is that you don't have to worry about removing them and there is generally less drooling than with other strips in addition to the low cost of about $15 per box. They also use a lower concentration of the hydrogen peroxide bleaching solution, so they are less problematic for people with sensitive teeth. The drawback is that they generally only whiten up to half a shade per treatment.

Professional Teeth Whitening

If you really want to get whiter teeth, you may want to go with professional teeth whitening systems. Professional methods generally take less time to get results and they also tend to last longer than over the counter systems. The biggest drawback is the cost. However, it may be very worth it to you to get that bright, white smile that you have been wanting. You can have your family dentist do this procedure, or you can go to whitening clinics that are supervised by dentists. Your dentist may create trays that are molded to fit your teeth exactly. He will place a solution of hydrogen peroxide bleach in the trays and then use ultra-violet light to increase the action of the bleach. Rather than trays, he may simply paint the bleach solution on your teeth before using the light treatment. This type of treatment can lighten you up to ten shades in an hour and can last up to about 2 years, but the disadvantage is the $300 to $800 it may cost.

Your dentist may also work with you on professional home teeth whitening systems that are approved and distributed by dentists. The kit includes the mouth trays that are fitted to your mouth as well as tubes of bleaching solution that is usually in gel form. You simply squeeze some of the bleaching gel into the trays and then place them on your teeth for the specified length of time, whether it is for a couple of hours or overnight until the entire tube has been used over the course of several daily treatments. These treatments will cost about $200 to $600, depending on the amount of solution required. The drawback is the cost, but the advantage is the many levels of lightening that can occur with these professional whitening methods.
