The skin is carefully peeled back, so that the surgeon may work on the platysma muscle which is found in the neck. Any sagging of the neck is usually due to the weakening—and therefore, sagging—of this muscle. Once it is exposed, the doctor may be able to tighten it, and then close the incision. Excess fat or skin can be removed at this time as well, so as to smooth the previously wrinkled areas, and provide a thinner, more youthful look to the patient.

The most important factor that must be considered in a neck lift is the quality of skin that a patient has. Those with especially thick or think skin may not be particularly qualified for such a procedure. A personal consultation with the doctor will prove to be helpful in deciding if the patient’s skin is appropriate.
