Hymenoplasty

Hymenoplasty is the reconstruction of a woman's hymen. It is a procedure that is not usually administered through gynecology. It can however be done in some plastic surgery centers. While not a particularly big practice among Westerners, you can find this kind of procedure done in countries like the US, Japan and parts of Western Europe. It is a very simple and straightforward procedure that is considered to be a surgery. During intercourse, the newly restored hymen will rupture and cause bleeding, which is the main purpose that it was reconstructed for. This is of particular interest to people that come from cultures where proof of virginity is considered to be of extreme importance.

Hymenoplasty Procedures

A Hymenoplasty can be performed for different reasons, which will each have their own type of procedure. Let us look at a few examples of how and when a hymenoplasty might be used:

In some cases, a woman may have her hymen torn due to situations out of her control. This could be from a sexual assault in which a woman that has not had any previous sexual intercourse has her hymen damaged or torn. In this case, suturing may be performed as part of the hymenoplasty. Suturing involves the use of a specially designed medical device called a surgical suture. It is used to hold different body tissues together after an injury has occurred or surgery. Surgical suture will consist of a needle that has a length of thread attached to it. Depending on the kind of damage that may have occurred to the hymen, will determine the kind of surgical suture used as they come in different shapes and sizes.

The second procedure that can be used in hymen restoration is through the use of a wholly cosmetic procedure. This method will utilize a kind of membrane such as a gelatin capsule, which contains a substance that looks like blood.

Another type of hymenoplasty will utilize a part of the vagina lining in order to create a new hymen. This newly created flap will have its own blood supply and closely resembles the original hymen. If a woman has this type of procedure done, she would have to refrain from having any kind of penetrative sexual intercourse. This will be for a period of up to three months until such time that the newly created Hymen has healed.

One particular benefit for a woman that has had a hymenoplasty, would be in the case where cultural influences or laws aggressively dictate that she must retain an intact hymen. For example, in some cultures, a woman will be considered unfit as a wife if it is found that her hymen is not intact. In this case, it will be very beneficial to have a newly restored hymen created for the purpose of bleeding during postnuptial intercourse. In some cultures, a sign of blood is seen as an indication of a woman's virginity.

Hymenoplasty Complications

The risks in having a hymenoplasty are extremely low, and there are no known complications that have arisen from this procedure.
