Dermabrasion for Deep Skin Rejuvenation
In an effort to deeply
cleanse the skin of the face, and fix problems caused by blemishes, scarring, or small wrinkles, many people
turn to dermabrasion to improve or restore their beauty.
Dermabrasion involves the removal of the top layers of skin (those that have received damage from the sun, acne,
scars, and other things) in order to allow the skin to regenerate those spots with new, smooth, blemish-free
skin. Dermabrasion is not forcedly an anti aging treatment.
Dermabrasion Procedure
Either a wire brush or a
diamond wheel called a burr will be selected by the doctor, with the patient in mind so as to determine the
appropriate amount of coarseness. After the affected areas are carefully cleansed and a local anesthetic is
administered to the skin, the dermatologist will use this burr or brush on highly specific locations of the
skin. The rapid rotation of the dermatologist’s materials actually
takes off and planes the affected layers of the skin. A small area
is treated at a time, so the procedure may last for a couple of hours if the dermatologist has much to work
on.
Often, an ice pack or a
freezing spray will be applied to the treatment area to help the skin become firm enough to work
on. After the procedure is finished, the treatment areas will be
covered in a special ointment, and dressed with appropriate bandages to allow it to heal
correctly.
Dermabrasion Contraindications
Individuals with active
infections such as herpes, or any other rash or infection of the skin are not good candidates for
dermabrasion. Also, many medications used for the treatment of
acne, such as isotretinoin or Accutane may be contraindicative for the procedure. Patients who have recently undergone any type of facial plastic surgery, or
who have problems with excessive scarring, are highly discouraged from undergoing this dermal
treatment.
Dermabrasion Price
A full dermabrasion in the
United States may cost the individual around $2,000-$4,000. The
amount of skin that must be treated, as well as the depth of the scarring may play a part in the final cost of
the procedure. Any anesthesia used will also cost the
patient.
Dermabrasion Complications
Dermabrasion is a cosmetic
surgery; nevertheless, it is an abrasive procedure. However, with
the natural way that skin works, the point is that new skin will grow where old skin has been
removed. However, this regrowth will often take about a week to
form. The face may also remain pink for up to three months
following the procedure, depending on the depth of the treatment.
There may be a risk of infection, or extended pain and tightness in the skin. Damage from sun exposure is also highly possible following dermabrasion. In
general, if you experience serious or painful symptoms, your Physician will prescribe you an appropriate
treatment to fight against these health issues.
